XANT-Eocycle Merger

XANT merges with Eocycle, a Canadian mid-size wind manufacturer

Once in a while you come across an individual with whom you have so much in common that you skip a lot of the introductory chit-chat and can dive straight into more in-depth and rewarding discussions. Call them soul-mates, or kindred-spirits; fact is that you wish you had met before.

Not sure if there is an analogy in the corporate world but if there was it would certainly be applicable to Eocycle and XANT. Very early in the process of the (tentative) merger, we found out the DNA of both companies is incredibly similar making it a very smooth transition to one company with one common vision. It is however in the small differences in approach and focus that lie the strength of our merger.

Unifying the Vision and combining our strengths

Eocycle originated from its founder’s (Maxime Dubois) desire to valorize the unique aspects of the Transverse-Flux Permanent Magnet (TFPM) motor-generator he developed during his thesis work.  The high torque density, simple construction and low mass make it an ideal generator for wind turbine applications and so Eocycle was born.  Upscaling from 5 and 9kWprototypes led to the 25kW platform and continuous design-for-manufacturing improvement to the current second-generation product: the EO25 wind turbine.

So just as XANT, Eocycle started from a best-in-class wind turbine design and raised the bar for the competition. But similar to XANT they went beyond the product itself but rather considered the complete cost-of-ownership when performing their engineering exercise.  Containerized transport of all components, crane-less erection thanks to the tilt-up towers, fiber-reinforced concrete for the most cost-efficient foundation, fewer parts / robust design for minimum down-time and easy maintenance: to XANT followers these USP’s will sound familiar.

Like XANT, Eocycle does not make any claim it cannot firm up with an independent review: the EO25 wind turbine has received type certification according to the IEC 61400-2 standards as well as complies with UL and CE standards. Power curve verification and noise measurements have been performed by accredited test institutions.  Both the Eocycle and the XANT team have essentially adopted the kind of rigor of the design procedures of multi-MW wind turbines.

While XANT adopted a “zero-asset” manufacturing approach (outsourcing to multiple vendors the manufacturing and pre-assembly), Eocycle started out  as a manufacturer of electrical machines and thus has always had a more integrated supply chain. Being able to switch from one strategy to another, and combining the vendor network of both companies will deliver value to both the XANT M (100 kW) and EO25 (25 kW) products resulting in lower cost-of-electricity for the user.

A wider product portfolio, a global presence

The Eocycle-XANT merger creates a technology leader in the mid-size wind industry with a product portfolio suitable for meeting annual electricity demands in the 50-500MWh range.  The merged company will have a strong presence in both north America and Europe, the strongest markets for behind-the-meter wind power.  Both brands will remain in existence for now, until someone comes up with an even better name!

About Eocycle:

Founded in 2001, Eocycle this year celebrates 20 years of developing profitable and hassle-free wind turbine solutions. Our patented Transverse Flux Permanent Magnet (TFPM) generator technology allows us to produce more compact distributed wind turbines requiring fewer moving parts. They provide more power than competitor products at low rotational speeds, without the contribution of a gearbox.

Since 2013, the company has been managed by a team of seasoned managers coming from the manture large wind industry. Since then, Eocycle’s strategy has focused exclusivelly on developing the distributed energy market, where the EO25 wind turbine (25 kW) stands apart from the competition, in offering the best financial performance of the industry.

About XANT:

XANT is a manufacturer of midsize (50…500kW) turbines for the microgrid and off-grid markets. XANT turbines are designed with microgrid applications in mind and a special focus on remote areas and harsh operating conditions. They have Just Enough Essential Parts (JEEP!), fit in 40ft containers and can be erected without a crane. For deployment in typhoon-prone areas the turbines can be lowered to the ground, also facilitating the maintenance. XANT turbines have the capability of active power curtailment and can be equipped with integrated energy storage to allow for a high penetration rate.

The extreme simplicity, easy maintenance, silent operation and low cost of ownership make XANT turbines ideally suited for wind power on remote locations and close to the consumer.  The XANT product portfolio consist of the XANT M (100kW) and the XANT L (330kW) – commercially available in 2021- platforms. Both turbine types exist in class Ia (average wind speeds up to 10m/s) and class IIIa (7.5m/s) executions; for extremely cold areas Cold-Climate executions are available.
